If you are thinking the 4bt will have 150hp/300tq, I would compare it to the 6.2L in my 1990 Burb. For comparison, the 6bt (lightly modified) in my 79 K30 has as much power as my 454, but gets better mileage, and cruises steadily at a lower RPM (yes, quieter than *my* 454). Only complaint is the fuel mileage (of course). With that said, I love 12V Cummins engines for the simplicity (no electronics), good power, and good reliability.īut a 454 is also good. I get 14 MPG cruising and I had lots of money left over to lock the front and rear, add PS, disc brakes, paint, bunpers, winches, guns, bird dogs, 4 wheelers, trucks, etc.First, my choices for your situation if it were me, ranked in my order of preference (which you didn't ask for so just ignore)Ģ) If you definitely want the Chevy, keep the existing 454 that's in itģ) Rebuild the existing 454 in the Chevy if it needs it. I think 4BT would be cool just like I think a heavy duty 5 speed would be cool, but when it comes time to actually spend my money and time I run a 302 with 87 mustang EFI bought on ebay for $90 and a completely free NP435. Even thogh some will argue you will eventuall break the D44, F9, and D20 as well as the 3550 if you try to run them behind the 4BT, unless you keep a very light foot and don't wheel it hard, but then why bother with the 4BT. Go 4BT if you want but you will probably never pay it back unless you pur 50K of highway milage on it in a year and drive it 200-300K miles.

So if you are not making any long road trips, well nopefully you see the point. Takes a long time to justify the cost difference when the only time it is actually different is on long road trips. But since these things are almost identical until you shift into 5th there is no gas milage advantage until you actually shift and stay in 5th. They always jump up and say how much better gas milage they get.

Will you really drive it enough to justify any economic desision? It takes the lifetime of the vehicle to make even minor cost differences up and in this case you will spend a lot of money on the 4BT over the 351.įunniest thing I see is people tryint to justify alll the extra expense of a 4550 or other 5 speed overdrive when the NP435 is almost free when you compare all the costs of the coversion.
